Tangut Ideograph 186CF

5840/6136

𘛏’s scholarly Tangut reading is na¹ (“nah”), with tone marked 1; that gives you a sound, not an English translation. It is a Tangut character, not Chinese writing or an emoji. The script served the Western Xia court and survives in Buddhist manuscripts.

What 𘛏 means

Scholars reconstruct its Tangut reading as na¹. It sounds roughly “nah”; the raised 1 marks the tone in this scholarly notation.

The Tangut script was established around 1036 for Western Xia administration, Buddhist translation, and a distinct state identity. It took visual cues from Chinese writing but formed its own script and language. Khara-Khoto manuscripts preserve translations, classics, and military works; Tangut writing continued after the Western Xia fell.
