What 𘛟 means
It is the Tangut word for an uncle. Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary supplies this gloss; it identifies a Tangut word, not a Chinese reading.
Why was Tangut script created?
It served the Western Xia (Xixia) state and Tangut literature. Tangut writing supported Buddhist scripture translation and expressed Tangut identity alongside Song China. Its square forms were influenced by Chinese writing and the neighboring Khitan script. The Khitan were another regional people with their own writing system.
A manuscript from Khara-Khoto, a ruined settlement in Inner Mongolia, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut manuscripts and inscriptions remained in use after the Western Xia state fell.
