What 𘛫 means
Scholars reconstruct its reading as ljiw¹. The superscript marks tone in this scholarly notation. It records a sound, not an English translation.
In 1036, Li Yuanhao, ruler of the Tangut state of Western Xia, ordered the Tangut script as part of building the state and giving the Tangut language its own written form. Its design drew on Chinese character shapes and construction principles, but it was not derived from Chinese. The Tanguts followed the example of their Khitan neighbors, who had created separate scripts.
Tangut writing served Buddhist texts and translations of Chinese works. An undated Tangut manuscript fragment probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century; the latest known Tangut inscription is dated 1502.
What does it mean if someone sends 𘛫 alone?
It identifies a Tangut character, but not why it was sent.
Its structure may look familiar to readers of Chinese characters, but that does not make it Chinese writing: Tangut is a separate script for a different language. A Tangut specialist may recognize the reconstructed reading; without surrounding text, the sound notation does not give a translation.
In historical writing or a language note, it identifies a Tangut character; its reconstructed reading alone does not translate it.
Treat ljiw¹ as scholarly sound notation, not as an English gloss.
