Text symbol

What 𘜃 means

It is glossed “equal,” but is not a mathematical equals sign.

The Tangut script was created in the early 11th century for the Western Xia (Xixia) state. It wrote Tangut, a language of that state, and drew on Chinese and Khitan writing traditions while remaining distinct. It served official, legal, and Buddhist texts. After Western Xia fell, it continued in Buddhist manuscripts, printing, and religious inscriptions.

Historical and philological in tone.

“Equal” is a dictionary gloss, not a general mathematical equals sign.
