What 𘜩 means
Its Tangut dictionary gloss is “deep.”
A Tangut dictionary compiled by Li Fanwen indexes the character as L0253. Unicode's label identifies the character by code point; it does not translate the Tangut word.
Where did the Tangut script come from?
It was created for the Western Xia state.
Western Xia's first emperor commissioned the Tangut script around 1036 for government and cultural life. It was used in official documents, Buddhist books and sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts. After the dynasty fell, it remained in use in Yuan and Ming settings before becoming obsolete. That date marks the script's creation, not the first surviving appearance of this individual character.
Why does 𘜩 look Chinese?
Tangut is a distinct script with square, component-based characters.
It developed in a Chinese-writing environment, but Tangut characters are unique and unrelated to Chinese ideographs. A Chinese reader cannot infer this character's meaning from its shape.
A historical Tangut word; its dictionary gloss belongs in the context of Tangut writing.
Its Chinese-like shape does not give it a Chinese reading.
