Tangut Ideograph 18739

5946/6136

𘜹 means “to ring” in the Tangut language. Around 1036, Xixia (Western Xia) commissioned a script to write Tangut and mark state identity; it served records and Buddhist and Chinese translations. The earliest surviving Tangut text is an official record from 1072. After Xixia fell in 1227, the script survived into China’s Ming dynasty. As of 2026, dictionaries, lessons, and fonts support its study.
