Tangut Component-714

What 𘫉 means

It is an indexing component, not a word. Unicode uses Tangut components to index characters and describe how their parts fit together. In the component index, 𘫉 identifies one structural unit; its label does not give it a standalone word meaning.

Tangut writing was developed for the Western Xia court, a medieval state in northwestern China. The recognizable script is conventionally dated to about 1036 CE. The court used it for the Tangut language, administration, state identity, and translation work that included Buddhist and Chinese texts.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued through the Yuan and Ming periods and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Its design followed the Khitan precedent of a state-sponsored script and drew on Chinese visual and compositional ideas while representing a different language. In one Tangut component family, 𘫉 is the left-hand form and 𘫊 the right-hand counterpart.

Why does Tangut component 714 show as a box?

The font may lack this glyph. 𘫉 is a text character drawn by the active font. If the font lacks support for Tangut characters, it may show a blank, square, or fallback mark even though the character is encoded correctly. Try a font with Tangut coverage before treating the box as a different symbol.

Specialist: it appears in Tangut component indexes, character references, and font tests.

714 is an index label for this component, not its translation.

Why does 𘫉 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
