What 𘞆 means

It means “to be thin” in Tangut.

Tangut was the language of the Tangut people, written with its own character-based script; this graph records a word rather than depicting thinness.

If someone sends it alone, read it as Tangut text or a deliberate reference to Tangut writing; the surrounding message supplies any personal tone.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It was created for the Tangut state and its language.

Commissioned in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao, the script supplied the state with an official written form of Tangut and a translation of the Buddhist canon, its major collection of religious teachings. A native script also marked Western Xia’s political and cultural independence from Song China. Its design drew on Chinese writing and scripts used by the neighboring Khitan people, but Tangut wrote a different language.

Tangut writing carried government and legal documents, Chinese translations, Confucian classics (texts on moral and political teaching), military works, and literature. It stayed in use after Western Xia fell; the latest known inscription is dated 1502.

Which characters are connected to 𘞆?

Its dictionary and word-form links are specific, not visual guesses.

The Sea of Characters, a Tangut dictionary, analyzes 𘞆 as the left-hand component of 𗻬, a separate character also glossed “thin.” This is a Tangut-specific character analysis, not a rule about Chinese characters in general.

Studies of Tangut pair 𘞆, “be thin,” with 𘞇, “make thin.” Their reconstructed pronunciations differ slightly in vowel quality, matching the difference between describing something as thin and making it thin.

Scholarly and historical; in conversation, it reads as a reference to Tangut writing.

Tangut characters write Tangut words, even when their forms recall Chinese writing.
