What 𘞈 means
It is a Tangut character, but context decides its gloss. One dictionary index links it with the Chinese character 念, which can mean “think,” “remember,” or “read”; another scholarly dataset reconstructs a different Tangut reading. These are estimates of an extinct language, not a settled everyday reading.
A documented household register uses 𘞈𗨝 for “single status,” an entry marking a person as unmarried. That compound gives a real meaning in context; it does not establish a fixed standalone chat meaning.
Is Tangut Chinese?
No; 𘞈 belongs to the Tangut script. The script was created under the first Western Xia emperor around 1036 for the Tangut language and state. Western Xia was a Tangut-led state, and its script served administration, schools, bilingual diplomacy, and Buddhist translations and printed books. Writing continued after the state fell in 1227 under later Yuan and Ming rule; the latest known examples date to 1502.
Tangut's square forms look Chinese-like, but it is a separate script for a different language; ordinary Chinese readings cannot decode this graph. Khitan and Jurchen were other historical scripts used in neighboring states, not alternate names for Tangut.
A 12th-century Tangut rhyme dictionary called Sea of Characters organized signs by their components and rhymes. It shows that Tangut had its own way to study written forms and sounds.
How do I type 𘞈?
Use a Tangut input method or a Unicode escape.
In source code, write \U00018788; in HTML, use 𘞈. Display depends on font coverage: a font without Tangut support may show a square or fallback mark, and Tangut fonts can draw the same encoded character differently.
Historical and specialist. In casual chat, an isolated send is best read as Tangut text or a specimen until context clarifies it.
A bare send gives no dependable emotional cue; read the surrounding message before guessing at tone.

1Why does 𘞈 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
