What ఎ means
It writes Telugu’s short e vowel.
Use ఎ at the start of a syllable; after a consonant, the same vowel takes the dependent sign ె, as in చె. The two forms serve different positions: the letter stands alone, while the sign attaches to a consonant.
Researchers Krishna and Rajashekhar compared Coastal, Rayalaseema, and Telangana speech in a 2013 acoustic study and reported regional differences in how long speakers hold this vowel.
How did Telugu writing develop?
It grew through regional forms of older Indian scripts.
Telugu writing developed through Southern Brahmi, an ancient Indian writing system, including the Bhattiprolu variety and later South Indian forms. The shape of ఎ was inherited through that history, not invented for Unicode.
An inscription at Kalamalla, dated about 575 CE, is regarded as the earliest complete Telugu record. It records a gift under a Renati Chola ruler. Its opening vowel may be read as short e or long ē because the inscription uses the same written form for both.
Why is Telugu e related to Kannada?
Telugu and Kannada share a script ancestry.
By the 5th century, their scripts shared an alphabet; they developed as distinct traditions during the 12th and 13th centuries. Kannada ಎ is the corresponding independent short-e vowel, but each letter belongs to its own script.
The Telugu script also writes languages such as Gondi and Lambadi. A modern written style based on colloquial Telugu emerged in the second half of the 20th century.
