What ้ means
It helps determine a syllable’s tone, rather than spelling a sound. This Thai diacritic—an added mark on a letter—works with the initial consonant’s class, a spelling group used to work out tone.
The contrast is audible: ข้าว (rice) has a falling tone, while ร้าน (shop) has a high tone. Read the whole syllable, not just the mark.
Why was mai tho made?
It helps put Thai’s differences in pitch into writing. Tone marks became part of Thai spelling to represent distinctions that consonant and vowel letters alone could not fully show.
Early Thai tone marking appears in inscriptions from the Sukhothai writing tradition, around the fourteenth century. Those early inscriptions used tone marks sporadically. Their values changed over time, so an old mark should not automatically be read using modern Thai tone rules.
Why does mai tho float by itself?
It attaches to another character instead of standing alone. Text-rendering software positions it above a Thai base letter and can stack it with other marks. Without a suitable base, it may appear on a dotted circle. That circle is a display placeholder, not part of the Thai spelling.

1Why does ้ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
