thai character mai ek

Thai Mai Ek

68/87

Mai ek ่ is a Thai tone mark: it helps tell you how the voice pitches a syllable. In Central Thai, it indicates low tone with mid/high-class starting consonants and falling tone with low-class ones.

Text symbol

What ่ means

Its tone depends on the consonant’s spelling group. These “classes” group Thai consonants for tone rules; they are not pitch instructions themselves.

Thai writing developed from Old Khmer writing in the 13th century, adding marks for tone distinctions. An inscription dated 1292 is early evidence, but its authenticity is disputed. In the Sukhothai period, an early Thai kingdom, mai ek could also distinguish vowels.

1

Why does ่ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
