Three-Thirty

Text and emoji forms

Same symbol, two display styles.

🕞 is a clock face reading 3:30, half past three: the short hand sits between 3 and 4, the long hand points straight down at 6. People send it to pin a time (“meeting 🕞”, “pick-up 🕞”) or just as a generic clock when the exact hour doesn’t matter. It can’t show morning or afternoon, so write “am” or “pm” when that matters.

What 🕞 means

A clock showing half past three, and nothing hidden. 🕞 is one of 24 clock-face emoji, one for every hour and every half hour on a twelve-hour dial. The hands on this one give 3:30: the hour hand halfway between 3 and 4, the minute hand on the 6. If you grew up on digital clocks, that is the whole trick to reading it.

In practice it does two jobs. The first is literal: a school pick-up, a call, a train, a dentist appointment at 3:30, dropped into a message or a calendar note. Because the hour hand points to the right-hand side of the dial, most people read it as afternoon, and in countries that count hours to 24 it stands in for 15:30.

The second job is looser. Many people grab whichever clock face is nearest in the keyboard row to say “time”, “schedule”, “waiting” or “running late”, without caring which hour the hands show. So when 🕞 sits next to “almost done” or “hurry up”, don’t read 3:30 into it.

What does it mean when someone sends 🕞?

Usually: this is the time, be there or expect it then. Next to a plan or a place, take it at face value as 3:30. Alone, or next to ⏰ or 😴, it is more likely the generic clock, meaning time in general or the slow middle of the afternoon.

Two things it cannot tell you. It has no way to show morning or afternoon, so a 3:30 that means the small hours needs the word written out. And “half three” is a trap across languages: an English speaker says “half past three” or, in Britain, “half three”, but German, Dutch, the Nordic languages and several others count toward the next hour, so their “half four” is this same 3:30. When the time matters, confirm it in digits.

Neutral and practical. It states a time or gestures at time in general and carries no mood of its own.

It cannot show a.m. or p.m.; a 3:30 that means the morning needs the words written out.

Afternoon coffee break at 3:30.

Worth knowing

  • The clock set covers every hour and half hour, but nothing finer: there is no emoji for 3:15 or 3:45, so quarter hours get rounded or typed in digits.
  • Half past three has a different name almost everywhere. English counts back from three, German and Dutch count forward to four, and British “half three” means this same 3:30.

Questions people ask

3

Is 🕞 3:30 in the morning or the afternoon?

It can be either. A twelve-hour dial has no a.m. or p.m., and in a 24-hour country it stands for 03:30 as much as 15:30. Most people mean the afternoon; say so if you don’t.

Does 🕞 have a hidden or slang meaning?

None that is widely established. People use it literally for 3:30 or loosely as any clock. If the hour makes no sense in the message, read it as “time” or “waiting”.

Why is there a separate emoji for 3:30?

Because the whole set was designed as 24 faces, twelve hours plus twelve half hours, so that any common appointment time could be shown with a picture rather than a number.
