Thumbs down: light skin tone

A one-tap no that stings. The thumbs-down is how you dislike, downvote or veto without typing the awkward sentence: a bad take, a dead plan, a song that needs to stop. On rating buttons it is the negative half of a pair, the vote against where 👍 is the vote for.

Its shortcode :-1: matches a voting habit older than emoji: on mailing lists and in open-source projects, +1 means yes and -1 means no. In Apache's formal votes on code changes, a justified -1 counts as a veto. GitHub ties 👎 to that same -1.

What does it mean when someone sends you just 👎?

A flat no, not an attack. A lone 👎 reply means disagree, disapprove, or decline, with no essay attached. Read it as terse, not furious, unless the rest of the thread is already on fire.

Context rewrites it. From a boss on shared work it lands as a cold veto; one sentence would have softened it. As 👎👎👎 from a friend, it is theater: mock horror and joking boos, not real anger.
