What 𑓘 means
It writes eight in Tirhuta numerals. Its position determines which decimal place it fills.
Tirhuta evolved from Gauḍī, also called Proto-Bengali, which developed from the Kuṭila branch of Brahmi by the 10th century. By the 14th century, Tirhuta had become distinct from Bengali, Newari, and Oriya scripts; its earliest identified records are temple inscriptions from the 13th century in Bihar and Nepal. It was used for Maithili and Sanskrit, especially in scholarly and religious writing.
From the late 20th century, Devanagari displaced Tirhuta for most Maithili writing. As of 2026, Tirhuta appears in religious and literary texts, correspondence, signage, and formal invitations. Its use can give writing a heritage or ceremonial tone.
How do I type 𑓘?
Use a Unicode Tirhuta input method. Ordinary number keys enter the plain 8, a different character. For a passage, use a Unicode Tirhuta layout, converter, or on-screen keyboard.
In an editor with Unicode hexadecimal entry, enter U114D8. You still need a font with Tirhuta coverage to see it correctly.
Inside Tirhuta, it is ordinary number writing; outside that script, it needs context and can carry a heritage or ceremonial tone.
If the other person needs the familiar plain 8, use 8.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𑓘 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
