What 𑒧 means
𑒧 is the Tirhuta letter ma. Tirhuta grew from Gauḍī (Proto-Bengali), a regional script in the Kuṭila branch of Brahmi, an early Indian writing system, by the 10th century. Its earliest identified temple inscriptions—writing carved on temples—date to the 13th century. By the 14th century, it had become distinct from Bengali, Newari, and Oriya script traditions.
What was Tirhuta used for?
Tirhuta served Maithili and Sanskrit writing. From the 14th century, it carried literary, philosophical, and religious writing. Maithil Brahmin communities kept pañjī (genealogical registers) in it. In the 1950s, Devanagari formally replaced Tirhuta as Maithili’s script. As of 2011, Tirhuta still appeared on ceremonial invitations and traditional documents.
