What 𑖦 means

A Siddham transliteration method can enter it with m.

𑖦 is the consonant m with its built-in short a: ma. Attached vowel signs change the syllable; a virama removes that vowel. In a conjunct, it joins other consonants. It is one letter, not a complete mantra or fixed religious emblem.

Siddham carried Sanskrit sounds in Buddhist texts. The script also reached Central Asia, while its best-documented later traditions developed across East Asia.

Why did Siddham become associated with Buddhism?

Buddhist transmission gave Siddham a lasting role across East Asia.

It reached China in the 6th–7th centuries CE, then Korea and Japan. Chinese Buddhist scholars used Siddham to preserve Sanskrit texts and study their pronunciation, while also giving individual letters esoteric interpretations.

After the Northern Song period, Chinese Siddham study declined as Buddhist traditions became more local. In Japan, Kūkai and Saichō carried the script forward in the early ninth century. Shingon and Tendai Buddhism use it in ritual and meditation.

Where did Siddham come from?

Siddham took shape in South Asia around the fifth century CE. Its name reflects the practice of writing the Sanskrit word siddhaṃ, meaning “accomplished,” at the tops of documents. It evolved as a script tradition rather than appearing as a one-off invention.

Siddham belongs to the wider Brahmi family of South Asian scripts and is historically closest to Sharada. Later Siddhamātrikā forms developed into regional lines including Sharada, Proto-Bengali (Gauḍī), and Nāgarī. These are historical script connections, not just similar-looking strokes.

Specialist and liturgical: an isolated letter points to a Siddham or Sanskrit setting, not everyday chat.

By itself, 𑖦 is one letter, not a complete mantra.

Why does 𑖦 look different in different fonts?

It can. Siddham has historical and regional forms, and fonts draw them differently; judge the encoded character and surrounding marks, not the outline alone.
