What 𑒆 means
It is Tirhuta’s standalone letter for a long “u” vowel. It can form a vowel-only syllable; 𑒴 is the dependent sign that attaches the same vowel to a preceding consonant.
The oldest known Tirhuta inscriptions date to the 13th century. Tirhuta descends from Gauḍī, also called Proto-Bengali, a script that grew from the older Brahmi script family. By the 14th century, Tirhuta was distinct from related Bengali, Newa (Newari), and Odia (formerly Oriya) scripts. It served Sanskrit first, then Maithili from the 14th century.
Tirhuta carried religious and literary manuscripts, genealogies, and personal letters. Devanagari replaced it as Maithili’s primary script in the late 20th century.
