siddham letter uu

Siddham Letter Uu

𑖅 is Siddham’s independent letter for Sanskrit’s long “oo” vowel, written ū in transliteration. It starts a syllable; after a consonant, Siddham uses a dependent vowel sign. The letter can appear inside Buddhist writing without being a symbol or mantra on its own.

What 𑖅 means

It is the independent Siddham letter for the long “oo” vowel. Sanskrit transliteration marks that long sound as ū. In Siddham, 𑖅 writes it when a syllable starts with a vowel; after a consonant, a dependent vowel sign takes its place. The letter gives a sound, not a complete word or translation.

North Indian inscriptions attest forms called Siddhamātrikā and Kuṭila during the 6th–10th centuries, as Siddham developed from Gupta writing. Later scripts in its family include Śāradā, Gauḍī (Proto-Bengali), and Nāgarī. These are historical writing-system connections, not identifications based on a similar outline.

Why is 𑖅 used in Buddhist writing?

It writes Sanskrit in Buddhist texts, not a symbol on its own. Siddham wrote Sanskrit in inscriptions and manuscripts. Surviving examples from China, Japan, and Korea are especially associated with Buddhist manuscripts, so 𑖅 may occur within a sutra, mantra, or dhāraṇī as an ordinary vowel letter.

As use in India waned, Japanese Shingon and Tendai traditions kept Siddham in ceremonial and ritual writing. A catalogue submitted in 806 lists Sanskrit study materials and Siddhamātṛkā texts brought from Tang China. In East Asia, the script acquired a marked Buddhist association while 𑖅 kept its vowel role.

How do I type 𑖅?

Use a Siddham-aware transliteration input method. Bonji Input maps uu to independent letter 𑖅 and huu to 𑖮𑖳, an h consonant plus the dependent long-oo sign. Other tools may use different mappings.

Japanese calligraphic and historical Siddham forms may look unlike a code chart’s representative outline. A font draws the visible shape, so a missing-glyph box points to font coverage, not to a different character.

It signals Sanskrit or Siddham study, Buddhist practice, or historical-script work; outside those settings, it reads as specialist.
