What ꘩ means
꘩ means the number nine.
Unlike the script’s syllable signs, which spell words, ꘩ is a number.
The history of Vai numerals starts with the script: its earliest surviving sample dates to 1834; the Book of Ndole, an early Vai text, followed around 1845. Tradition credits Momolu Duwalu Bukele with creating it, while a proposed Cherokee influence remains disputed. Ten Vai-specific digits were devised in the 1920s. The Unicode 17.0 chart (2025) marks the set as not in modern use; everyday Vai writing uses familiar 0–9 digits.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꘩ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
