What ꔧ means
It is a Vai syllable sign, not a standalone message.
The label “Vai syllable hin” points to a Vai syllable with a nasalized vowel: begin with a breathy h, then say i while air passes through your nose.
Vai signs represent morae, small timing units in speech; one spoken syllable can use more than one sign, and tone is not marked. Surrounding Vai text determines the word’s meaning.
Where did the Vai script come from?
It developed in Liberia in the 1830s.
A manuscript dated 1834 is among the earliest surviving Vai specimens. A note on it links the script to young Vai people who wanted to exchange letters in their own language after seeing Americans do so. Vai tradition credits Momolu Duwalu Bukele and associates; accounts differ on how much earlier the script took shape.
The script later appeared in personal letters, business ledgers, family histories, and traditional stories. Mende Kikakui, a neighboring African syllabary, drew on a Vai model. A proposed Cherokee connection remains disputed; resemblance alone does not establish a link between ꔧ and a Cherokee sign.
Should I send ꔧ by itself?
Alone, it reads as a Vai character sample, not a full message.
Inside a line of Vai, ꔧ is ordinary writing; its word and sentence carry the meaning. If it is sent alone, treat it as a Vai script sample unless the sender gives more context.
Inside Vai text it is ordinary writing; alone, it reads as a script sample.
