What ꕍ means
It marks the syllable named Han in Vai writing.
The Vai script began around 1832–33 so Vai speakers could write their language; a surviving Harvard manuscript from 1834 may be its earliest specimen. It served correspondence, records, trade, literature, tombstones, and ritual settings. Standardization was attempted in 1899 and 1962; learning remained informal as of 2026.
Possible influence from Cherokee is debated, not established. Latin, Arabic, and an older pictographic tradition are also discussed in accounts of the script’s formation.
