What ꕌ means
It writes the ha syllable in Vai words. The Vai ha sign contributes that syllable inside a word; alone, it does not name an object or idea. In ꕚꕌ, the first sign has the same vowel; ꕌ follows it to mark a long a sound.
The history of the Vai script begins in Liberia in the early 1830s. It is associated chiefly with Momolu Duwalu Bukele and was developed with other Vai speakers. Material collected in 1834 and the Book of Ndole, also called the Book of Rora and dated ca. 1845, show early use. The script served correspondence, records, and trade; later Vai writing includes diaries, histories, folktales, and religious translations.
Why was the Vai script created?
It gave Vai speakers a way to write their language. The exact trigger is unsettled. One origin account links Bukele to a dream; proposed influences include contact with Latin and Arabic, possible Cherokee influence, and older Vai graphic signs. These are accounts of the script’s origin, not evidence that ꕌ was copied from another script.
Early Vai texts included variant and obsolete signs. Standardization work culminated at a University of Liberia conference in 1962. The syllabic design later influenced neighboring Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts; this is a connection between writing systems, not evidence that ꕌ itself appears in them.
In Vai writing, ꕌ is an ordinary syllable sign; outside that script, readers may not recognize it.
