What ꕳ means

ꕳ writes the Vai syllable ho.

A syllabary gives signs for syllables: ꕳ contributes one syllable inside a Vai word, and the surrounding signs supply the word’s meaning. A common Latin transliteration writes it ho; Unicode’s English name spells it hoo. The spellings name the same sign, not two characters.

Why was the Vai script created?

It was devised to write Vai in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The Vai script took shape in Liberia around 1832–1833. Several Vai speakers who had not learned to read or write developed it; Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ was its principal inventor and promoter. The earliest surviving documentation dates to 1834. A handwritten copy of the Vai work The Book of Ndole is dated ca. 1845. The writing system predates its digital encoding by well over a century.

Vai writing served correspondence and record-keeping, especially among merchants and traders. Teaching and standardization efforts reshaped the syllabary. The Vai script also stimulated the Mende, Loma, and Kpelle syllabaries. Possible Latin, Arabic, or Cherokee influence is discussed as historical stimulus, but does not establish direct descent from those scripts.

What does ꕳ mean when someone sends it?

Read an isolated ꕳ as Vai text, not a complete message.

It gives you a syllable, not the whole word. Ask for the surrounding Vai text before guessing what the message means.

Use ꕳ in Vai writing or when discussing the Vai syllabary; alone, it reads as a syllable sample.

Alone, it gives a syllable, not the full word; ask for the surrounding Vai text.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ꕳ show as a square box?

The font used for the message lacks Vai support. Choose one with Vai glyphs; a square or question mark means ꕳ did not render, not that it is another character.

Does “hoo” name a different Vai syllable from “ho”?

No. “Hoo” appears in Unicode’s English character name; “ho” is the common Vai transliteration for the same sign, not a second character.
