What ꕫ means
ꕫ writes the Vai syllable kan; the word around it gives context. In the Vai syllabary, signs join inside words without spaces. This character is one part of a Vai word, not a complete message by itself.
The earliest surviving Vai-script sample is a page written by Fan Dawo Kelondo at John Leighton Wilson’s request and recorded in 1834. The Book of Rora, also called the Book of Ndole, survives from the mid-1840s. These early examples show a writing tradition that was still developing.
Vai writing served practical needs such as education, correspondence, record-keeping and trade. Later origin accounts describe a dream, while the role of outside writing systems remains unsettled; Latin, Arabic and Cherokee have been discussed as possible influences. Some European copies of early Vai examples redrew the signs. University of Liberia standardization in the 1960s added distinctions and narrowed the range of accepted forms. Vai’s syllabic organization later inspired writing systems for Mende, Loma, Kpelle and Bassa.
Someone sent me ꕫ — what does it mean?
It is one Vai syllable; ask for the surrounding word. If the sender is writing in Vai, ꕫ is one syllable inside a larger word. Ask for the surrounding word or sentence before deciding what they meant.
An ordinary syllable in Vai writing; by itself, it does not mark a special tone.
