ꖏ represents the Vai syllable “koo,” roughly k plus a clear o-like vowel. In Vai writing it supplies one syllable to a word; the romanized “oo” names the vowel rather than marking length.

Text symbol

What ꖏ means

It represents the Vai syllable koo. Vai is written with a syllabary: most characters write a whole syllable. In the standard Latin transliteration, “oo” identifies this Vai vowel; it does not mean the syllable is long. For a long vowel, Vai may add a second character such as ꘌ, the lengthener.

Vai is spoken in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The syllabary took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s, led primarily by Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ, who said a dream inspired him. A note on a 1834 manuscript—perhaps the earliest surviving Vai-syllabary example—says young people wanted a way to write to one another in Vai after seeing Americans exchange letters.

Unicode leaves the script’s outside influences open: possible stimuli include Latin and Arabic writing and perhaps the Cherokee syllabary, a writing system developed by the Cherokee people in North America. Another possibility is that Bukẹlẹ organized an earlier pictographic system into syllabic writing. These are script-level theories, not established ancestry for ꖏ.

What does ꖏ mean if someone sends it?

It gives a syllable, not the sender’s full intent.

Vai writing is used for correspondence and record-keeping. A 1978 literacy report also lists business ledgers, family and clan histories, diaries, maxims, and traditional tales. The report credits Vai writing with encouraging later Fula- and Manding-language script-making in West Africa. In a Vai passage, ꖏ contributes one syllable; without surrounding text, it cannot tell you the sender’s full message. Ask for context if you need it.

How can I type ꖏ?

Use its four-character hexadecimal value, A58F, with a Unicode input method. Checked 2026-10-08: in Word on Windows, type A58F then press AltX; on macOS, select Unicode Hex Input, hold Option, and type A58F; in GNOME/GTK, press CtrlShiftU, type A58F, then Space or Enter.

Neutral in Vai writing; outside a Vai passage, it is a script sample rather than a complete message.

One syllable alone cannot tell you why someone sent it.
