What ꕕ means
It represents the Vai syllable labeled “kpan.”
A syllabary gives a character to a syllable, a speech unit that can form part of a word. In Vai writing, ꕕ contributes that unit to a word; by itself, it is a script sample rather than a complete message.
Vai writing took shape around 1833 among speakers who had not learned to read and wanted to write their own language. One account links the idea to young people who saw Americans exchanging letters and wanted to write to one another. A surviving manuscript from 1834 shows how quickly the script took written form.
Why do older Vai forms look different?
Vai letterforms changed before modern standardization.
Early Vai records show variant shapes, and some reproductions made outside Vai writing traditions redrew characters. A 1962 standard helped bring modern forms together. Unicode’s Vai set draws on that standard, the 1911 additions of Momolu Massaquoi, and The Book of Ndole, a long surviving early Vai text.
Vai literacy grew in coastal Liberia and Sierra Leone alongside English and Arabic literacy. In the first half of the twentieth century, the Vai syllabic design influenced writing systems for Mende, Loma, and Kpelle. Their creators made new characters, so that historical link does not make individual glyphs interchangeable.
How do I type ꕕ?
A Unicode Vai layout enters the actual character.
A Unicode Vai keyboard layout writes ꕕ as Unicode text. Older custom-encoded Vai fonts use their own character mappings, so text entered with them may not be portable Unicode text.
A font or app needs Vai support to display the glyph. If none is available, it may show a box or blank space; that is a display failure, not a different character.
Neutral within Vai writing; unexplained when dropped into a conversation without Vai context.
If the recipient does not read Vai, identify it as a syllable from the Vai script.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꕕ show as a box?
The box means the font or app cannot display the Vai glyph; it is a rendering fallback, not a new character.
