vai syllable mba

Vai Syllable Mba

84/300

ꕓ writes the Vai syllable transcribed in Latin letters as “mba”; to enter it, use a Unicode Vai keyboard or your app’s character picker or hexadecimal input. It belongs to Vai writing, so its word-level meaning depends on the Vai word it appears in. If it shows as a box, the text may still contain the right character while the active font lacks its glyph.

What ꕓ means

Use a Unicode Vai keyboard or your app’s character picker. If your app supports Unicode hexadecimal entry, type A553; the shortcut is app-dependent. Typing the Latin letters “mba” does not automatically enter ꕓ.

Unicode stores the character; a font draws its glyph. A font without Vai coverage can leave it as an empty box even when the text contains ꕓ.

What does ꕓ mean in Vai?

It writes the Vai syllable transcribed as “mba.”

A Vai syllabary writes spoken syllables. This sign supplies one syllable in Vai text; its word-level meaning comes from the Vai word it belongs to, not from an English translation printed on the sign.

The Vai script writes the Vai language, spoken in Liberia and Sierra Leone. It has been used especially for correspondence, record-keeping, and trade.

Where did the Vai script begin?

It emerged in Liberia in the early 1830s. The early development is linked chiefly to Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ and other Vai writers. The earliest surviving sample is a one-page manuscript dated 1834, written by Fan Dawo Kelondo at missionary John Leighton Wilson’s request.

The origin story remains unsettled. A 2022 study describes Vai as a fresh invention by eight men; the Unicode account allows possible awareness of Latin and Arabic writing, perhaps Cherokee, or the regularizing of earlier picture-based signs.

The shapes shifted as people copied them, and manuscript comparisons show simpler forms over generations. Standardization efforts included 1899; a reference syllabary followed in 1962. As of 2026, Vai is still learned informally, with no single enforced standard.

ꕓ is a syllabic sign in Vai writing; the glyph alone does not give a full word translation.

A lone ꕓ does not tell you what a Vai word means.
