vai syllable mbi

Vai Syllable Mbi

46/300

A Vai transliteration layout can enter ꔭ with mb followed by i. The character represents the Vai syllable written “mbi” in Latin-letter transliteration; it is part of a written word, not a chat reaction. If it appears as a square or question mark, the font may not support Vai.

What ꔭ means

In Vai transliteration, type mb, then i.

MediaWiki's help page, as of 2026, describes a browser-based Vai transliteration layout that maps mb followed by i to ꔭ and lists Gboard as a mobile route.

The same guide, as of 2026, notes that systems without a Vai font may show a square or question mark.

What does ꔭ mean?

It writes one Vai syllable, transcribed as “mbi.” Vai is a syllabary, a writing system whose basic characters represent syllables; this one belongs inside a written Vai word.

The earliest surviving written sample of Vai is dated to 1834; that date belongs to the surviving evidence, not to the creation of this individual character. The script has served correspondence, education, record-keeping and trade, and Vai writing also appears in historical and religious material.

Early records preserve spelling variants and signs that could stand for whole words, alongside syllable signs. Standardization efforts in 1899 and 1962 favored a more sound-based spelling system built around syllables. A short syllable uses one character; a long syllable or diphthong can take a second. Vai writing developed amid Arabic and Latin literacy, but its syllabic structure is distinct. A proposed link to the Cherokee syllabary remains conjectural; Vai later inspired other indigenous West African writing projects.

Is ꔭ an emoji?

No. ꔭ is a syllabic writing character in the Vai script. A standalone message still reads as written Vai; any extra intent has to come from the sender or the surrounding words.

It belongs in Vai spelling; in a chat, readers need Vai context to read the syllable.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꔭ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
