What ꔈ means

ꔈ represents the Vai syllable transliterated “mbee.”

“Mbee” is a Latin transliteration, not a full-word translation. In Vai text, ꔈ contributes a syllable within a word, so read it alongside the surrounding characters. By itself, it can serve as a writing sample or an input test.

Vai is written from left to right with syllable-sized characters. Some short syllables use one character, while long syllables can take two, so one glyph need not be a whole word. The Vai input guide documents a transliteration layout where typing mb then e produces ꔈ.

How did the Vai script begin?

It emerged collaboratively among Vai speakers in Liberia around 1832 or 1833. A missionary report from 1834 called the writing recently invented. A Cambridge study identifies an early Vai manuscript as the oldest surviving manuscript in an indigenous African script south of the Sahara.

The script served practical needs: Vai speakers used it for correspondence and records, and education helped it spread among merchants and traders. Characters such as ꔈ let writers record spoken Vai in that syllabary.

The script changed over time. Its oldest texts include logograms—signs associated with meanings—alongside syllabic signs. Standardization efforts in 1899 and again in 1962 did not remove all variation. A possible link to the Cherokee syllabary, the writing system for Cherokee, remains debated; the better-documented connection is that Vai’s success helped inspire later West African scripts.

How do I type ꔈ?

Use a Vai transliteration keyboard if available.

The Vai input guide describes a transliteration layout: type mb, then e, to produce ꔈ. The same guide points mobile users to Gboard’s Vai support.
