Vai syllable Ndole Fa

273/300

ꘐ is the older Vai syllable Ndole Fa, corresponding to modern FA ꕘ; it contributes a syllable sound inside a word rather than carrying a message by itself. It belongs in Vai text, including the early manuscript tradition of The Book of Ndole. The script was created in Liberia in the 1830s for practical reading and writing.

What ꘐ means

It is the older Vai syllable Ndole Fa, corresponding to modern FA ꕘ.

Vai is a syllabary, a writing system whose signs represent syllables. ꘐ corresponds to the syllable called “fa”; its value comes from the Vai word around it, not from a pictorial meaning.

The old “Ndole” label appears in an early manuscript tradition preserved in The Book of Ndole. A specimen from 1834 is described as the earliest surviving manuscript in an indigenous script from sub-Saharan Africa; the surviving Ndole manuscript is estimated at ca. 1845. Later standardization distinguishes this historical form from its modern counterpart.

Vai is written left to right without spaces between words, and long syllables can use two characters. ꘐ normally belongs in a sequence, so the surrounding Vai text helps show which word it belongs to.

Where did the Vai script begin?

It took shape in Jondu, Liberia, around 1832–33.

Momolu Duwalu Bukele and associates developed the syllabary as a practical writing system. Vai schools taught it, and people used letters, records, messengers, and written trade accounts to carry information.

Arabic and Latin literacy influenced the idea of writing, but that does not establish a settled parentage for Vai. A proposed Cherokee connection remains conjectural. A possible pictographic precursor has also been proposed; later standardization moved Vai toward a system whose signs represented spoken syllables more consistently.

Neutral in Vai-language writing; outside that setting, it signals Vai script text.

Do not confuse ꘐ with ꘘ, a separate Vai logogram.

Someone sent me ꘐ; what does it mean?

You cannot infer a reliable message from one syllable. Ask for the surrounding Vai text or a translation.

Why does ꘐ show as a box?

A box usually means the active font cannot display this Vai character; the text may still be present. A 2023 Unicode update on African scripts listed Noto Sans Vai, Kigelia, and SIL Vai as fonts with Vai support.
