vai syllable noo

Vai syllable noo

148/300

ꖓ is the Vai sign for a syllable represented in Latin letters as “noo”; the surrounding Vai word gives its meaning. It belongs inside Vai spelling, where neighboring characters help identify the word. Alone, it gives too little context for a confident translation.

Text symbol

What ꖓ means

It writes the Vai syllable represented in Latin letters as “noo.”

In a syllabary, each character stands for a syllable, a spoken unit with a vowel. The Latin-letter form “noo” labels this sign; it is not a translation of a complete word. Short syllables use one character, while a long vowel or a diphthong (two vowel sounds together) can use a second character or a length marker.

Older manuscripts show variations in handwritten forms and cases where outsiders misread them; later standardization regularized what reference materials teach. As recorded in 2018, some Vai readers knew only part of the standardized character set.

Why was the Vai syllabary developed?

It was developed so Vai speakers could write in their own language.

The Vai script developed in Liberia in the early 1830s. A manuscript by Fan Dawo Kelondo dated 1834 may be the earliest surviving example. Its accompanying account says young Vai speakers wanted a way to communicate in writing after seeing Americans exchange letters.

The script later served correspondence and record-keeping, especially among merchants and traders. Standardization efforts in 1899 and 1962 changed which forms were treated as standard. Mende, Loma, and Kpelle writing systems drew design inspiration from Vai’s syllabic organization; possible Cherokee influence on Vai remains debated.

What does ꖓ mean when someone sends it?

A lone ꖓ gives too little context for a confident translation. Ask for the surrounding Vai text before assuming it is a complete word or a reaction.

In Vai writing, the sign is neutral; alone, its role depends on context.

Don’t assume a lone ꖓ is a complete word or a chat reaction.

Why is ꖓ showing as a square?

A square or question mark usually means the font lacks a Vai glyph. MediaWiki’s 2023 guide attributes this display problem to missing Vai-font support; a font and text system with Vai support can render it.

Why is ꖓ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
