What ꖹ means

ꖹ writes one short spoken syllable, nyu.

Vai is used for the Vai language in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The script took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s, chiefly through Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ. A missionary report from 1834 describes it; researchers usually place the surviving early manuscript, the Book of Ndole, in the mid-1840s.

Vai writing served correspondence and record-keeping, especially among merchants and traders.

How does Vai spelling handle longer syllables?

A longer Vai syllable can take a second character.

Vai writing tracks morae, or the timing weight of a syllable. A short syllable such as ꖹ uses one character; a long vowel, diphthong, or final ng can need another. That extra sign belongs to the spelling, not as a mark attached to ꖹ.

The Vai system belongs to Liberia's indigenous Mande writing traditions. Its connection to Cherokee writing is debated: both are syllabaries, but Cherokee influence on Vai remains uncertain. Latin and Arabic influences and a possible earlier pictographic precursor have also been proposed. These are theories about the script's development, not documented links between ꖹ and individual Cherokee characters.

Why does ꖹ show as a box?

Missing Vai font support can turn ꖹ into a box.

An unsupported Vai font may show a square or question mark instead. Choose a font with Vai coverage to see the intended character.

Why does ꖹ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Vai block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
