What ꖷ means
Read it as mu within a Vai word.
In the Vai script, ꖷ contributes the syllable mu; other syllable signs complete the written word. Vai is written without spaces, so this sign appears as part of continuous text rather than as a standalone reply.
The Vai script developed in the early 1830s for written communication; the earliest surviving sample is dated 1834. A note with that sample says young people wanted to exchange letters in their own language after seeing Americans exchange letters.
How did the Vai script develop?
Its origin story includes a dream and possible outside influences.
Bukẹlẹ later described receiving the script in a dream. Its early forms may also reflect Latin and Arabic writing, and perhaps Cherokee, but no single source explains the whole script.
Early Vai manuscripts include letters and records, as well as moral writing shaped by Islam and accounts of wars. The script's syllabic organization later influenced Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts; the creator of the Bassa alphabet knew Vai.
Why does ꖷ show as a box?
The active font may lack a Vai glyph.
The app's active font lacks a glyph for this Vai syllable, so it displays a missing-character box. That box is a font-support problem, not a different reading.
Legacy 8-bit Vai fonts are not Unicode fonts. For regular text, use a Unicode-aware Vai keyboard or input method and a font with Vai support.
In Vai text, ꖷ is a syllable within a word; on its own, it is not a complete Vai word.
