vai syllable ma

Vai Syllable Ma

111/300

ꕮ is a Vai syllable sign for “ma,” like “ma” in “mama.” In Vai writing, neighboring signs combine into words; sent alone in a mixed-script chat, it does not tell you the sender’s full message. The script took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s, and its written forms changed as Vai speakers used and taught it.

What ꕮ means

ꕮ represents the Vai syllable ma.

A syllable is one spoken unit, here the sound “ma,” like the first syllable of “mama.” Other Vai signs combine around it to write words, so this character gives a sound rather than a full translation by itself.

Someone sent me ꕮ—what should I read?

Read it as a Vai syllable; the surrounding text gives context.

In a Vai sentence, it contributes the sound ma; a reader who knows Vai can place it in the word. Alone in a mixed-script message, it identifies Vai text but not the sender’s intended word or message; ask for context if the meaning matters.

How did the Vai script begin?

Vai writing took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s.

Vai speakers, led by Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ, developed the syllabary to write their language. Bukẹlẹ later said a dream inspired him. The earliest surviving sample is a single page from 1834; the Book of Ndole, a longer manuscript, survives from around 1845.

Vai speakers used the script for correspondence, record-keeping, teaching, trade, literature, tombstones and ritual writing. Forms varied and some signs disappeared; standardization efforts in 1899 and 1962 shaped the later inventory. Early Vai writing also used logograms—whole-word signs: ꘘ can stand for “die” or “kill” and appears beside a person’s death date. Cherokee influence is possible but unproven; Ꭰ is not a counterpart of ꕮ.

Ordinary in Vai writing; outside that context, it marks a syllable but not a complete message.

If it arrives alone, ask for the surrounding text before reading a meaning into it.
