What ꖛ means
It writes the Vai syllable transcribed as “pu.”
The earliest known surviving Vai sample is a manuscript dated 1834. An account accompanying it says young Vai people wanted a writing system for their language after seeing Americans write.
Later manuscripts and standardization show Vai writing changing over time. Its documented history includes contact with Latin and Arabic writing. A Cherokee connection has been proposed but remains uncertain. Vai also used logograms—signs for whole words or ideas—alongside syllabic signs; resemblance alone does not prove borrowing.
Within Vai text, ꖛ is a neutral syllabic sign. Sent alone to someone who does not read Vai, it offers too little context to interpret as a message.
If the recipient may not read Vai, include the surrounding word or explain the context.
