vai syllable yee

Vai Syllable Yee

30/300

ꔝ writes one Vai syllable inside words; by itself, it is not a complete word or reaction. It belongs to a writing system developed in Liberia so people could write in Vai. A Vai input method can enter it.

Text symbol

What ꔝ means

It writes one Vai syllable for use inside words.

“Yee” is a Latin-script label for the syllable; in Vai text, ꔝ contributes sound within a word instead of expressing a separate idea.

The Vai script developed in Liberia around 1832, chiefly through Momolu Duwalu Bukele. Bukele said a dream inspired it; an early account also connects its creation with young people seeking a way to write their language. A manuscript dated 1834 is described as perhaps the earliest surviving example.

Was the Vai script influenced by Cherokee or Arabic?

Possible influence is debated; borrowing has not been established.

Historical accounts discuss influence from Latin and Arabic scripts, and a possible Cherokee connection remains a hypothesis. Similar-looking forms alone do not show that one script was borrowed from another.

Vai writing has served correspondence and record-keeping, as well as Qur’an and Bible translations, newspapers, notices, fiction, tombstones, and expressions of cultural identity. These are uses of the script as a whole; ꔝ keeps its syllabic role.

How do I type or display ꔝ?

Use a Vai input method and a font with Vai coverage.

A Vai input tool may accept a syllable typed in Latin letters and output the Vai character; a system character picker is another route. If ꔝ appears as a box, the current font may lack a Vai glyph. Another font may draw the same character differently.

Vai runs left to right without spaces between words. A long vowel or diphthong can take two characters, so one Vai character does not necessarily equal one word.

In Vai text, ꔝ helps spell words; alone, it does not convey a complete word.

Outside a Vai passage, a recipient may not know what ꔝ says; do not rely on it alone to carry a message.

Why does ꔝ show as a box?

Usually a font-support issue. The current font may lack a Vai glyph, so it shows a box or placeholder; another font can draw the same character differently.
