What ꔛ means
ꔛ writes one syllable in the Vai writing system. Vai is a syllabary: each character represents a syllable rather than a single consonant or vowel. Inside a word, ꔛ supplies one syllable; the surrounding writing supplies the rest, so the glyph alone cannot identify the whole word or a sender’s intent.
The script’s beginnings as actively used writing are traced to the early 1830s and Momolu Duwalu Bukele of Jondu, in what is now Liberia. Bukele later said a dream inspired it; scholars have also considered Latin, Arabic, or Cherokee influence, or the possibility that an earlier pictographic system was regularized. The origin story remains contested. Surviving evidence includes a one-page sample from 1834 and The Book of Ndole, a longer manuscript dated to about 1845; neither establishes when this particular syllable first appeared.
The 1962 Vai Standard Syllabary helped establish a reference repertoire. In the first half of the twentieth century, Vai’s syllabic organization also influenced Mende, Loma, Kpelle, and Bassa scripts; each used its own characters.
Neutral in Vai writing; opaque to someone who cannot read the Vai script.
Don’t infer a sender’s mood from ꔛ alone; it represents a syllable.

Questions people ask
2Why does ꔛ show as a square?
Your font may lack Vai glyphs. MediaWiki’s 2023 Vai guide warns that missing support can display a square or question mark; the character itself remains ꔛ.
Is ꔛ an emoji?
No. ꔛ is a text character in the Vai syllabary. Its shape comes from the font displaying Vai text, not from emoji artwork.
