vai syllable zhoo

Vai syllable zhoo

139/300

ꖊ is a Vai syllable sign: it contributes to a word but has no full translation by itself. Read it with neighboring signs, since Vai words normally run together without spaces. A missing Vai font can leave it as a square.

What ꖊ means

ꖊ writes one syllable in Vai. It contributes to a Vai word; the word, not this character alone, supplies the meaning.

A manuscript from Liberia dated 1834 may be the earliest surviving example of Vai writing. A note with it links the script’s creation to young Vai people wanting to exchange letters after seeing Americans do so. The script later carried correspondence, records, ledgers, religious documents, family histories, and traditional tales.

The script’s ancestry is uncertain: possible influences include Latin and Arabic, perhaps Cherokee, or phonetic reshaping of older picture-like signs. Some earlier signs were logograms, which can stand for whole words; ꖊ is a syllable sign. Mende Kikakui, a separate regional script, was likely influenced by Vai and Arabic. The Vai signs encoded for computer text draw on the 1962 Vai Standard Syllabary, modern primers (beginner reading books), and The Book of Ndole.

Someone sent me ꖊ. What does it mean?

Read it as one Vai syllable; alone, it has no full translation.

Vai writing runs left to right and usually has no spaces between words, so read ꖊ with the signs around it. If it arrives by itself, ask for the word or sentence instead of assigning it an English meaning.

Vai has been used alongside English and Arabic, so readers of the same message may have different familiarity with the script.

In Vai writing, it is ordinary text; outside that context, it reads as a script sample.

A lone syllable is not enough to translate the whole Vai word.
