vai syllable shoo

Vai syllable shoo

137/300

ꖈ represents a Vai syllable conventionally transcribed “shoo.” Sent by itself, it does not tell you the sender’s mood; in Vai writing, its role comes from the word around it. Vai text runs left to right without spaces, so one character may be only part of a word.

Text symbol

What ꖈ means

It writes one Vai syllable; alone, it gives no mood.

In Vai text, this character represents the syllable conventionally transcribed in Latin letters as “shoo.” The Latin spelling labels the syllable; the character itself is part of written Vai.

Vai uses characters for syllables rather than separate characters for each consonant or vowel. It runs left to right without spaces. A long syllable may span multiple characters, so ꖈ inside Vai writing can be only one part of the full word.

Why was the Vai script created?

Vai speakers developed it to write their language.

The Vai script emerged in Liberia around 1833 among Vai speakers who wanted to write their language without relying on an established writing system. It was reported beyond the region by 1834. Bukele is central in surviving accounts, including a dream story, while the history describes a collaborative emergence.

Writing in Vai served practical communication. Schools taught the script; later accounts describe its use in letters and record-keeping, especially among merchants and traders. Vai literacy existed alongside English and Arabic. Its forms and standards changed, and standardization efforts in 1899 and 1962 did not produce one version enforced everywhere. Its syllable-based design later inspired the Mende, Loma and Kpelle scripts; scholarship also discusses influence on Bassa, Bamum and Bamana.

How do I type ꖈ?

Use a Vai input method or Unicode hex entry.

MediaWiki’s Vai transliteration layout maps the keys sh followed by o to ꖈ, as documented in 2026. On a desktop system with Unicode hex input, enter A588 using that method; a Vai transliteration or language keyboard is more practical for full words.

If the character displays as a square or question mark, the font or app lacks Vai support. The character has not changed; view it with a Vai-capable font or app.

In a chat where the recipient cannot read Vai, a lone ꖈ is opaque script rather than a clear reaction.

Do not read a sender’s mood from this character alone.

Questions people ask

1

Why is ꖈ a square?

The font or app probably lacks Vai support. The square or question mark is a fallback display, not a replacement for the character the sender used.
