What ꗼ means

ꗼ is one syllabic sign in Vai. Its chart reading is romanized “she,” roughly a “sh” sound followed by an open e; that spelling names a Vai syllable, not the English pronoun.

The Vai syllabary writes a short syllable with one sign. A long vowel, diphthong, or syllable ending in the ng sound from “sing” takes two signs, so ꗼ contributes a syllable inside a larger word rather than spelling a whole word.

What does ꗼ mean when someone sends it?

Alone, it gives you a Vai syllable, not a translation. Inside a Vai word, its sound contributes to that word; if someone sends it by itself in an English chat, ask for context instead of reading it as the pronoun “she.”

The Vai writing system developed in Liberia in the early 1830s to write the Vai language, with Momolu Duwalu Bukele prominent in its history. The earliest known sample is dated 1834; the Book of Ndole, an early Vai text, preserves writing from around 1845. Traders used Vai for correspondence and record keeping. The script also became an orthography learned informally alongside English and Arabic. Standardization efforts took place in 1899 and the early 1960s.

Vai’s historical connections to other scripts are debated. Scholars discuss Arabic and Latin influence and possible Cherokee influence; resemblance alone cannot establish a link. A Cambridge history links Vai’s syllabic model with Mende, Loma, Kpelle, and Bassa scripts, and possibly Bamum, whose makers also created new characters.

A Vai writing sign, not a chat reaction; a standalone send assumes the reader knows Vai.

Do not read “she” as the English pronoun.
