What ꗻ means
It writes the Vai syllable transcribed as se.
Vai is a Liberian syllabary—a writing system where each sign represents a syllable—developed to write the Vai language. In Latin-letter transliteration, this character is written se, roughly like s followed by the vowel in set.
Surviving samples cited in the supplied research date to 1834; a house inscription from 1849 is another early recorded example. Older and modern charts can differ because some signs were simplified and others disappeared. A debated historical proposal links exposure to the Cherokee syllabary with the idea of using a syllabary for Vai; that is a possible model for the writing system, not evidence that ꗻ descends from a Cherokee glyph. The Mende syllabary developed later in neighboring West Africa, and its creator had encountered Vai.
How do I type ꗻ?
On the SIL Vai layout, type s then e.
Vai keyboard layouts use different key sequences for the same syllable. The SIL Vai layout uses the s consonant row and e vowel column; the Athinkra Vai typewriter layout uses s then q. A standard Latin keyboard without a Vai layout will produce Latin letters.
Why does ꗻ show as a box?
The font may not support Vai.
A font without Vai support can show a square or replacement mark. Fonts that support Vai may draw ꗻ with different proportions; that changes its appearance, not its identity.
It marks a syllable in Vai-language writing; its reading depends on knowing the Vai script.
Sent alone, it may not explain its intended message to someone who cannot read Vai.
