What ꗽ means
It marks one Vai syllable.
The Vai script, used for the Vai language in Liberia and Sierra Leone, took shape in Liberia in the early 1830s, chiefly through Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ, who said a dream inspired him. Possible influences include Latin, Arabic, Cherokee, or older picture-like signs.
Vai’s syllabic pattern inspired Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts by the mid-20th century; their signs differ. A standard Vai syllabary was published in 1962, after an earlier standardization effort in 1899. As of 2025, teaching remained informal, and most Vai literates knew only some standard signs; merchants used it for letters and records.

ꗽ\A5FDWhy is ꗽ a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
