What ꗕ means

It writes the Vai syllable conventionally romanized as “zo.”

Vai uses a syllabary, a writing system in which each main character represents a whole spoken syllable. ꗕ may be one part of a longer Vai word or its only syllable; the word’s meaning comes from the Vai language around it.

The script developed in Liberia in the early 1830s, chiefly through the work of Vai writer Momolu Duwalu Bukele, who later said a dream inspired it. The earliest known surviving sample is a manuscript written by Fan Dawo Kelondo at missionary John Leighton Wilson’s request in 1834. Vai script was used for correspondence and record-keeping, especially by merchants and traders. By the late 1800s, European traders reported widespread Vai literacy.

How do I type Vai syllable zo?

As of 2026, type z then o in MediaWiki’s Vai layout.

That layout treats the Latin letters as transliteration keys; other Vai keyboards may use a different method.

Why can older Vai writing look different?

Handwriting varied, and early records sometimes altered the shapes.

Early Vai texts show different handwritten forms for the same syllables; some nineteenth-century European records altered forms while documenting them. Standardization efforts came in 1899 and at a 1962 conference. As of 2026, Vai is still learned informally, and many literate Vai readers know only part of the 1962 standard syllabary.

Older Vai texts also used logograms—signs for whole syllables with associated meanings. The script’s origins have several proposed explanations: familiarity with Latin or Arabic scripts, possible Cherokee influence, or the reworking of an earlier pictographic system. In the first half of the twentieth century, Vai’s syllabic organization informed Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts; some scholars also suggest an influence on Bamum.

Inside Vai writing, it is a neutral syllable sign; outside that context, it reads as a sample of Vai script.
