What ꘓ means
It stands for the whole word “thing,” not a syllable.
In Vai, ꘓ represents a complete word rather than a syllable or a picture. Its reading is conventionally transcribed as feŋ, roughly “feng,” with a final nasal sound formed at the back of the mouth.
The earliest surviving record of the Vai script is an 1834 manuscript; that does not show that this glyph was drawn then. Its note says young people wanted to communicate in Vai after seeing Americans exchange letters, pointing to correspondence and record-keeping as reasons for the script. As of 2026, Vai orthography notes list only two older logograms still in use. Older Vai texts, including those in the Book of Ndole tradition, used more; some fell out of use. The script’s broader origin is disputed: proposals include Latin, Arabic, or Cherokee influence, or the regularizing of an earlier picture-based system. Visual resemblance alone does not establish a source.
Someone sent me ꘓ—what does it mean?
Read it as “thing” only when the Vai context is clear.
In a Vai sentence, ꘓ works as part of the writing. In general chat without Vai context, the safest reading is simply a Vai character whose meaning the recipient may not know. Use it when the language or script is clear, not as a stand-in for an English word.
Neutral and language-specific; it belongs in Vai writing or a discussion of the script.
Without Vai context, the recipient may not know it means “thing.”

Questions people ask
1Why does ꘓ show as a box?
A font without Vai coverage has no shape to draw, so your device may show an empty box. A font that includes Vai characters can display it.
