variation selector-115

Variation Selector-115

Variation Selector-115 is an invisible mark that asks software to draw a particular form of the character before it, not a standalone symbol or emoji. It belongs inside a documented variation sequence; unsupported or unattached copies are normally ignored. As of 2026-08-03, Unicode’s registry for ideographic variants lists no registered sequence using VS115.

What 󠅢 means

It asks software to draw a defined form of the preceding character. VS115 has no standalone picture or readable message.

Unicode created variation selectors for plain-text cases where a font or rich-text style could not preserve a needed form. A 2000 proposal records Mongolian selectors alongside accepted general and supplementary ranges. Mongolian selectors choose positional letter forms; ideographic selectors preserve CJK glyph variants for different scholarly, governmental, and publishing collections. VS115’s number is a range index, not a universal “Japanese form” command.

Why does Variation Selector-115 disappear?

An unsupported or unattached selector is normally ignored. Unicode permits effects only for predefined standardized, emoji, or ideographic sequences. CSS font matching can seek a font for the full pair; otherwise it falls back to the base.

A range membership is not a universal instruction: VS115’s number does not select a language, font, or style by itself.

If someone sends VS115 alone, what does it mean?

It is not a secret code or reaction. Read an isolated copy as invisible text machinery. In a supported pair, the selector follows its base and requests a glyph choice; it never supplies the character’s meaning.

Machine-facing and specialist; use it for precise text data, not conversational decoration.

Do not send VS115 alone expecting an icon.

Questions people ask

3

Can VS115 change any character?

No. Only a predefined or registered base-plus-selector sequence can request a different glyph; unsupported pairs leave the base’s normal display.

Is VS115 an emoji?

No. It has no standalone picture; emoji presentation uses separate variation sequences, including the text/emoji selectors.

Can I use VS115 for bold or italics?

No. Variation selectors are not a general styling switch; Unicode excludes span-wide effects such as bold and italics.
