variation selector-20

Variation Selector-20

4/240

VS20 is an invisible selector with no meaning on its own. After a Han character, used in Chinese, Japanese, and some Korean writing, it can form a registered ideographic variation sequence (IVS) that requests one specific written form; an unsupported font or app may show only the base character. It is used when text must preserve that exact distinction.

Text symbol

What 󠄃 means

It requests one registered form of the character immediately before it.

On its own, VS20 has no visible form. The requested form is defined by the complete base-plus-selector pair, and the same selector can be registered with different base characters.

The mechanism was designed for Han characters whose regional or historical forms share one Unicode character. An IVS—one character followed by a selector—preserves a chosen form without assigning a new code point to every form. Unicode 3.2 documented variation selectors; later Ideographic Variation Database (IVD) collections registered exact pairs used in Japanese fonts and public-record workflows.

Why is variation selector 20 invisible?

It stays hidden when the exact pair has no supported alternate form.

A registered pair appears in its selected form when the font and app support it. If the pair is unregistered or the viewer lacks the needed form, the base appears and VS20 adds no visible mark. This fallback does not add emphasis.

Placement matters: after its registered Han character, VS20 requests that pair's form; by itself or after an unrelated character, it has no visible effect. Treat a lone VS20 as stray text data, not a message.

A supported VS20 pair signals a precise choice of Han character form in technical or record text.

Alone, it has nothing visible to modify.

Drift: As of 2026, the IVD continued receiving collection-specific registrations; each new registration defines a pair, not a universal meaning for VS20.

Questions people ask

2

Why is variation selector 20 not working?

No. A visible change depends on registration and font and app support; without them, the display falls back to the base character.

Can I use variation selector 20 by itself?

No. By itself, it has no separate reading or visible mark; place it immediately after a matching Han character only when the pair is registered.
