What 󠆟 means
The base character and selector have to be read as a pair.
Variation sequences preserve a glyph choice in plain text without relying on formatting. This supplementary range serves Han-character variants. The Ideographic Variation Database (IVD) registers exact pairs in separate collections for researchers, public agencies and publishers; its first collection, Adobe-Japan1, was registered on 2007-12-14.
Why is variation selector 176 invisible?
The selector itself has no graphic shape.
If a pair is undefined or an app or font cannot display it, Unicode’s fallback is to show the base ideograph normally and ignore the selector. Text can therefore look ordinary even when a variation selector remains in its underlying character sequence.
