What 󠄓 means
It requests a registered glyph variant after a Chinese-derived character.
An ideographic variation sequence (IVS) joins a Chinese-derived written character to a selector: the base identifies the character, and the selector requests one registered glyph form. The selector has no independent reading by itself.
Different registered pairs can select different forms. Japan’s Moji_Joho collection applies IVS to glyph distinctions needed in government information systems; the pair records an exact form where that distinction matters. Unicode proposal history records design work on the IVS in 2003, the history of this text mechanism rather than of the older character forms.
why is variation selector 36 invisible?
It has no standalone glyph, so a blank result is expected.
When a pair is unsupported or invalid, the base character still displays and the selector stays invisible. A supported pair can also look unchanged if the selected form matches the font’s default.
The app may preserve the selector in the text even while showing no separate mark.
A technical text control for documents that need exact ideographic glyph forms.
A blank standalone selector is not a separate sign; it modifies a preceding base character.

1Why does 󠄓 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
