What ๐งโ๐ป means
A person doing computer work: programmer, developer, IT, tech in general. The picture is someone seated behind an open laptop, and the laptop is the whole message. In a profile it is a job tag, the way marks a doctor or nurse: developer, engineer, system administrator, tech support, data analyst, anyone whose job is tech. It also appears on job adverts, coding-course announcements and students' "exam project tonight" updates.
Away from work talk it loosens. A friend who posts ๐งโ๐ป on a Sunday is at the laptop, not necessarily coding: working from home, finishing an essay, gaming, or simply online all the time. "Hacker" is a stretch people make only as a joke; nothing in the emoji suggests anything illegal, and there is no dedicated hacker emoji.
, or ๐งโ๐ป: which one should I pick?
Use ๐งโ๐ป unless you want gender in the picture. The plain form says nothing about who the person is, which makes it a good choice for a company post, a job ad or when you mean people in general. and say the same thing with a woman or a man, and all three come in five skin tones. Choosing is often deliberate: women use it in bios to be visible as women in tech, and groups for women in tech use it too. Neither gendered form reads as a different job.
What does it mean when someone sends it?
Usually "I'm at the computer working" or "that's what I do". "Can't talk now ๐งโ๐ป" means busy at the keyboard, often with a deadline behind it. As a reply to "what do you do?" it means a tech job. In a late-night message it means a long session, and paired with or it means something is broken and they are fixing it.
A plain, low-risk profession marker: fine in a work bio, a CV link or a company post, and casual enough for friends.

Questions people ask
3Can I use ๐งโ๐ป to mean hacker?
Only as a joke. By default it means programmer or IT worker, so people read it as work, not cybercrime. Add or and friends will get the mischief.
Why is it called technologist and not programmer?
The official name is broader than programmer: it covers tech work in general, not only writing code. That is also why some keyboards don't find it under "programmer"; try "technologist" or "laptop".
Why do I see a person and a laptop as two separate emoji?
Your device, app or font doesn't support this combined emoji, so it shows the two building blocks and . The message itself is fine and means the same thing.
